It’s no secret that the hard rock music scene has been needing some new fresh female voices to help fill out the male dominated genre, and with that being said I am excited to share with you New Munster, Wisconsin’s hard rock act, The Almas, and there latest beautifully heavy single ‘Crowns’.
Crystal Teigland is the lead vocalist of The Almas, and she brings one of the most beautiful voices to the music scene in 2023. Crowns is an interesting song if you try to call it hard rock, because it feels closer to Paramore in their heavier days than, perhaps, a band like In This Moment. This is not in any way meant as a negative view, just an observation. Crowns is a great song that would easily be suggested following a listening to Decode. It’s a pleasant listen, both punchy and effective, which makes for a song you hit repeat on more than once.
Founding member and lead guitarist, Frank Slifka and guitarist Josh Sukowski know how to create a guitar riff that travels far into the listener. Crowns never oversteps its production while making sure the guitars are not suffocated by an aggressive amount of distortion. Many musicians would have drowned this track out with the focus on the heavy guitars, but the seasoned musicians clearly have a professional approach to songcraft that is undeniable. Drummer, Andrew Ehredt’s approach to the drumming on Crowns is interesting and exactly what the song needed. I enjoy listening to music and focusing on the individual pieces that make up the sum and when I focused on the drumming it was clear that Andrew must have a wide range of music interests to draw from, much like the drumming for Korn, it could easily have been focused on being as aggressive as possible, but instead there is something undeniably rock, pop, funk infused here, and it works.

Crowns is an empowering anthem meant to help listeners rise about the negativity and toxicity that tries to steal our crowns often. It is a song that is mixed and mastered to perfection with an important message that many will need to hear, and The Almas are wasting no time with lazy introductions, this is a band that could easily become a household name if they hit the live music scene hard with this song.
It’s always great to discover new music from artists of this calibre and I have no doubt that you will be adding them to your playlist after you take a listen.
