The journey an artist takes from the original concept to the finished product can often be a world apart from the initial intention. Fraught with dark moments and few victories in between, creating anything requires an unwavering faith in something more than the art itself, and for New Jersey alt-rock trio The Finite Beings, their deep faith has brought them right here to their beautifully crafted EP ‘A Shell Of What Could Be’.

Like many other bands, The Finite Beings had some great music ready to go and then, in what seemed like an overnight decision, the world shut down, because a new virus was ripping through the masses, and we were forced to stay inside and away from everyone. An isolation so heavy that it can still be felt today. During this time of deep self reflection for many The Finite Beings put together their pandemic-anthem ‘The Virus’, a song that captures the heart of what we had to all go through together only a few years ago.

Here we are now, we made it through and out the other side, and the music scene has been restoring itself with the focused efforts of authentic bands such as The Finite Beings. Opening with their latest rock-riff heavy single ‘Untamed’ we see another side of The Finite Beings that we did not see before, something has changed here, an evolution has taken place, and it’s as if the band decided to double-down on both their sense of rock music and dedication to their faith; and I couldn’t like this more.  Untamed is arguably their most complicated song writing to date. I don’t want to draw too many comparisons here, but the opening riff to Untamed is as memorable to me as something Black Sabbath would have created, with an element of Alice In Chains meets what current bands are trending with today.

LISTEN TO A SHELL OF WHAT COULD BE

Songs like ‘The Shade’ and ‘Hope Is Sleeping In Grace’s Arms’ showcase the vulnerable and personal lengths this band is willing to go to create a song intended to force their listeners to self reflect on something deeply important. They may not be the fastest songs on this impressive new EP but they hit just as hard when you take the weight of lyrics into account.

The second new single on A Shell Of What Could Be, titled ‘Time Slave’ channels a sound you might expect to find on a movie soundtrack involving great spanning deserts, old kings, and spiritual teachers. It very much has an esoteric feel to it, as if the band made up of lead vocalist, lyricist and drummer Michael Nicholas, Guitarist and backing vocals Donny DePaola, and Guitarist Hunter Kino all decided to invite us into a private spiritual moment.

LISTEN TO UNTAMED

A Shell Of What Could Be is nothing short of a gem of an alt-rock faith-driven EP, it feels like a diary entry from an old friend, it empowers us to celebrate our faith and find comfort in the love of God. The Finite Beings have put together a memorable album that we only wish was a full length album, and let’s hope that it heads that direction for this band.
