What’s this? A new EP from the ever-interesting Nu Pop duo, ET Boys?

Yes, I think I will put aside some time to listen to their latest EP titled PAOPU, as I was already a fan of their previous beautiful track This Is Us. WakeUp Music! did well to sign these two artists (Tacboy and Sharkeyes) as they have proven to create music from a unique space that often taps in some deep emotions with some light-hearted airy beats. It feels dramatically tropical, and as mysterious as their titles are, I am going to let you sort out what I am trying to say here.

Kicking off the 6-track EP is the fun and catchy-as-hell single Lame Shit Cool (Bussin’ Beto). This track captures the heart of what I was trying to say about ET Boys and their uniquely-dramatically-tropical type of sound, it’s a bit like capturing sunlight in a bottle with these two, and there is always a sense of a laid-back attitude with a slight dose of caring just enough about the context of the song itself. Lame Shit Cool (Bussin’ Beto) hails back to a late 90’s punk/pop vibe where bands like Blink 182 and Sum 41 were making waves on the scene, but then you add a bit of what Moby brought the table and you get this infectious single.

Following Lame Shit Cool (Bussin’ Beto) is the beautifully melodic, let’s go for a night drive, single Tonight. This one is more to my taste as it follows a bit more of a pop/rock flow, and it reminds of something one of my favorite bands, Coheed and Cambria, would try, well, more closely what lead singer Claudio Sanchez would try on his side project The Prize Fighter Inferno. Tonight, is a funky feel-good track that is ethereal in how it sounds. Heavy on the synth-pop, light on the R&B, this masterfully mixed single showcases yet another creative side of the ET Boys.

Young Drake……

Ok, so anyone who knows how I feel about autotune knows that I wish to have it removed from one of the tools that musicians can use for about a decade. That being said, sometimes a talented artist understands how to use it to a songs benefit, and I do think that ET Boys pulled this off with flying colors on their single Young Drake. I was worried that the song might fly off the auto-tune rails and destructively hide their smooth vocals. So, I was truly relieved when they held back from the overindulgence here, because Young Drake is a great single that I think many will find to become their favorite on the album.

There is this band called Tycho. They create some very airy and dreamy music. The music often has a callback echo to it that transports listeners to a lighter being state of mind, and I feel that the brief single Meadow does much to capture the same effect. If there is a downside to be found in Meadow it is the brevity in which it sticks around, at only 2:26 in length, Meadow feels like it is ending right when it could be getting started…but that is what the replay button is for, right?

The next single Until Forever feels much like a diary entry from one heartbroken lover to another who might be a bit too far away. It is a thoughtful single that captures the artists self-reflection and self-awareness for how they might be the reason things have become a bit too difficult to handle. Until Forever is an apology a day too late, a love letter lost in the mail, and it is a beautifully sincere song that will no doubt resonate with many jaded listeners.

I knew that one song on this album would come in from leftfield and change up the pace of this EP, and that song is the anthemic final single Closure. This single is a bit more Black-Eyed Peas meets MGK. It is faster paced than the previous songs and mixed a bit louder. Closure feels like it is meant to act as a celebratory moment in the completion of this EP. It is a juxtaposition of a happy sounding song with a bit of downer message that says, “I’m waiting for closure from you.” Much like the singles that came before this track it is clear that ET Boys might be talking to someone specific on this one. I think that Closure might be my choice for the EP’s lead single. It is a fun song that arrives just in time to be added to everyone’s summer-beach-party playlists!

PAOPU is, simply put, a sweet-emotional-sunny and melancholic EP. Considering how it chooses to showcase its music in a way that feels optimistic, it makes sense that many listeners might choose to glaze over some of the deeper lyrics to be found within. When ET Boys create a song, they create something that is undeniably all theirs, and it’s great to see when artists trust in their own creative process rather than try to emulate the work of another. PAOPU deserves a spin from anyone who enjoys discovering new music from artists on the rise. Give ET Boys new EP, PAOPU, a listen today!
