When it comes to new music and whether I like it or not I always look for a few key points for the artist to hit. Is the song recorded well? Is there an emotional pull to the song? Does the music stand on its own without the vocals? And do the vocals stand on their own without the music itself? In the case of modern country rock musician Randall Lee Richards, he hits all these marks every time, and his latest heartfelt single ‘It’s Gonna Take A While’ is no exception.
Some have asked whether the world really needs another love song, and the answer is “of course it does.” There are so many emotional roads that a songwriter can take to talk about the one emotion that rules us all, and in the case of Randall’s new song, he has chosen to shine a light on the pain felt by looking back on love long lost. As a courtesy to the artist, I do want to be clear that this is not an autobiographical single by any means, at least currently speaking. As many of us artists do, we channel what we have personally experienced or what we have heard from others to create art that resonates with our viewers, and what Randall has created has been resonating with many listeners in its very brief time on the music scene.
The production value of ‘It’s Gonna Take A While.’ Is expectedly high. There is something about the sound requirements of country music that states that a song must be radio ready and beautifully mixed, and I am here to support that agenda. There are far too many songs being released that take no consideration of the fact that many of us own great headphones, and we can hear everything. This is why I love to hear what Nashville studios and Randall Lee Richards put out, it’s just polished to the core.
I am a listener who looks for vocals that stand out, and this is not only the artist’s vocal skills but also the unique sound of their voice. As someone who grew up through the 90’s Alt rock era, it was easy to tell one artist apart from the other, something which has been more difficult with the massive amount of copy-cat artists trying to solve the popularity formula, however, I can tell Randall’s uniquely low and smooth voice from the rest of the pack.
