Music Is A Sport. Don’t Drop The Ball!

It’s all about the music right? Wrong.

Unfortunately art in every form cannot exist on its own and achieve success with a limited view of all the extra business details. How you present your band is almost as important as what you present, but for many musicians, this is a difficult concept to wrap their heads around.
Yes your music needs to be professionally recorded and mastered, and I think every musician can agree on the importance of this one area; but what about your look, your logo, your website, your press release, and even your daily social media interactions? These too need your love attention and care; and failure in taking all these aspects seriously, can end up hindering the progress of a potentially successful music career. It is your music promotion that is going to define your success rate.
If you are going to operate on a truly professional level, then make sure to do so all the time and in everything that connects you to your musical projects.
You will need pro level photographers shooting your music PR shots.

You will need to make sure that your website looks like it isn’t a dead-zone of activity, suffocated by years of neglect and terrible design.
Your Press Release needs to read like you care about the reader themselves. There is no room for spelling errors or unnecessary and boring information. You want to be heard, and the professional level “key-holders” do not open their doors to just anyone.
As for social media, be conscious at all times of what your band stands for, and do not engage in any arguments that you do not want to share with your musical identity. It is way too easy to get caught up in the aggressive “buzz-feed” online. It seems every moment of every day someone is posting an article meant to piss you off and make you speak out, but keep in mind, this is how these companies get ratings. They only need to have you acknowledge them and their job is done. It is important to stay silent in the issues where anything buzz-feed related is involved. There are always more professional platforms on which to speak your beautiful mind, and one of those platforms is your music, don’t forget that.
Everywhere you look is another musician trying to be heard, but the ones that get heard are the ones that operate at a professional level at all times. They understand that this is not just a hobby, that it is a life. Music is also a sport. “Wait, what?” Yeah I said it. You are in competition, all the time, and that is what makes this industry so dynamic.

Music Is A Sport. Don’t Drop The Ball!

In theory, there is enough room for everyone, but we all know that not everyone creates waves in the industry. For those that want a much higher percentage of success, they will take heed in my words and embrace the importance of making sure that your life is your music, and your image is managed properly.
Never forget that you do not have to do everything yourself, and in fact, I don’t think you really should. Keep an open mind and look for creative artists who share your own vision. Hire the right photographer, a well-priced and skilled web designer, and even someone to write up your bands promotional packages. You are always welcome to put in your thoughts during the creative process, but the right artist will understand what you are about after hearing your music anyway. If you manage your help properly, then you can focus on what you want to do most; make music!
Never compromise. Never water it down. And above all else, never forget that it is the music business, not just the music.
