It has been an impressive run over the last few years for Canadian Country-Rock singer/songwriter, Russell Lee. This Winnipeg, Manitoba local has been releasing one impressive single after another, while releasing music videos, playing live shows, and returning for back-to-back performances at Canada’s longest running country music festival; Dauphin Countryfest. Proof that working hard pays off, Russell Lee is showing no signs of slowing down his dedicated pace to the arts; and fans are really starting to take notice.
This time around, Russell has added a new complexity to his songwriting, and his brand new single “First Time”, is layers upon layers of new instrumentation. We have come to expect a high quality of sound from Russell, as we saw with both “Picture” and “Meant To Be”, as well as his ability to tell a compelling story from an honest emotional space. First Time channels Russell’s desire to let that special someone know just how special they are, and to be honest, it’s just great to hear something that wears its heart so openly on its sleeve.
First Time opens with a high-energy country-roots style opening, and it is a departure in tempo from what we are usually accustomed to when it comes to a Russell Lee style song. Rather than build up to an emotional apex, this track decides to start running, and then keep that dancing pace up throughout the rest of the song. Upon listening to this single another time, I noticed the depth of the tracks layered one on top of another. The vocals are accompanied by fitting and fun backup vocals, the banjo’s, the strings, and the boot-stomping tempo are exactly what they need to be.
Russell Lee has a classically brooding country-rock voice, and that voice plays perfectly on this inspired song. Lyrically, you can tell that Russell really takes from his own experience when he sings his message, and in many ways, I can draw parallels between Russell Lee’s story-driven approach to songwriting and the legendary Tom Petty’s.
With country-rock music, it really does polarize the audience that it reaches, and for many, this beautifully crafted song might miss its mark, but for those who have country-rock running through their veins, this is going to be a welcomed track to add to their playlists.
