THE PROBLEM WITH MUSIC PROMOTION TODAY
By now, you are well-aware of the universal law that; change must happen (well, you should be well-aware of it anyway). The problem that has existed for far too long within the entire Music PR scene is that Music PR Firms do not want you to connect with this one law; as doing so would make you a conscious musician aware of the power to be found in seeking out the positive effects of change; instead of just simply denying them outright.
Let me ask you. Does the internet exist?
Yes, obviously; right.
Even under the weight of all the hard evidence of the existence of the internet, indie musicians, all over the world, are still acting as if they are not living with the world’s collective knowledge right at their fingertips; and this is exactly how Music PR Firms want it to stay.
As long, as you don’t dig too deeply into the idea of your own power and ability to promote your own music in this DIY Music PR revolution of yours, and as long, as you don’t embrace the change in the scene; then everything is as it should be, right?
Wrong.
This is the reason why we have a new sickness that permeates the entire Music PR scene; and Music PR Firm Dependency is its name.
Music PR Firm Dependency (MPFD) is the idea that if a musician stays unaware of their own abilities to gain their own press, their own radio play, and their own exposure for their music, then they will, ultimately, stay attached to the idea that they need to keep paying for their music promotion to succeed and further their own music careers.
I mean, of course you need to pay Music PR Firms for their industry contacts, right? Once again; wrong!
You can get your own contacts, it really isn’t that hard, and it is far less expensive than the alternative Music PR Campaign route.
We build personal relationships within this organic and powerful industry, and it is not unusual to see an artist stay working with a single industry professional throughout multiple releases, out of loyalty, trust, and respect; and I have personally made some great friends from this deep show of appreciation from our clients. The problem that I have come to acknowledge is that there must come a moment where we choose to help our clients to embrace the change that is so taboo in this industry to talk about; if we do our jobs right, then there will comes a time when an artist will no longer need us. If we truly want to help the artists, then holding back information is simply not an option.
I understand that if you are still reading this, you must be wondering why the Founder of a Music PR Firm is so blatantly shooting himself in the proverbial foot, by trying to get artists to see their own power to promote their own music?
The answer is quite simple; My clients, are my friends, and I want my friends to feel empowered, and I want them to succeed in their own outreach.
I think, that at the core of it, we all know that you are either a part of the problem or you are part of the solution; and I have no intention of keeping musicians caught in the cycle of Music PR Firm Dependency. Not when they are so close to discovering their own power to free themselves from the machine, and not when I know that I have the power to help them awaken their own inner Music Promoter!
I want you to see that there was a time when the internet did not exist.
A time where a musician needed a larger label to open their great (expensive) doors to the people, and a time where a musician needed to tour the world to meet the people on the other side of it. Yes, there was a time where someone else had to sell your music for the price of you selling your music rights to them first; a time BEFORE THE INTERNET.
It is not the fault of today’s artists that they still feel the need to believe in the old Music PR scene, because it is not in the interest of most Music PR Firms to create conscious and aware clients. Yes, they offer advice, but they do not offer the keys. They offer hope, but they do not offer the truth. They want you to gain some exposure, but they want to take credit for that exposure as well; and above all else, they do not want you to see your own DIY Revolution, even though it is staring you right in the face!
Well, I do, because I know that change must happen.
Do you see the vast amount, of potential places to share your music, without having to pay to share it? I do.
Do you know how close you are to getting played on the radio? I do.
Do you see yourself within the industry itself and not just creating outside of it? I do.
Do you see yourself as the best Music Promoter that you know? I do.
In the interest of complete transparency, as altruistic as this entire article sounds, I do have an agenda here; obviously, and I hope you can approve of my sincere agenda.
The problem with Music Promotion today is that it looks a lot like the old style of music promotion. It is not focused on the well-being of the artist themselves, and more so, it is aimed at how to create symbiotic relationships between the artist and Music PR Firm; and in this union we do not talk about parting ways, we do not talk about how you can learn to do this yourself.
For this reason, I have created our Music Promotion Mentorship Program (www.empiremusicpromotions.com).
